Registered Trademark: The Business Owners’ Essential Guide to Brand Protection by Cheryl Hodgson is an absolute essential read for anyone with a business or brand. It is a comprehensive yet simple and easy to understand guide to registering your trademark in today’s internet-driven world. Cheryl provides a 3-step process that is essential to registering your trademark and avoiding not only rejection but theft. Cheryl is a veteran in the legal and business world that has the knowledge and expertise to provide a proven and factual guide that anyone can understand and follow. I was surprised that this book was so easy to comprehend and follow. I was worried that since it was a legal and business guide that it would be full of cryptic technical speak, but Cheryl was able to write everything in easily understandable words. In today’s world, the internet is everything and hackers and scammers are everywhere. Registering a trademark is not as simple or clear cut as it used to be. New rules and regulations apply to safely and securely go through this process now. I was astounded at the number of ways and threats that internet hackers can use to steal your work. Cheryl provides you everything you need to avoid this. I highly recommend this book to anyone in the business world looking to brand or rebrand a trademark. Trademark!!! All the what's, why , and hows concerning this aspect of business that isnt talked about but so important!!
If your aspiring to be a successful entrepreneur, then this is a must read and should be kept in your office at all times, because your going to need for reference. Now when you think of world known trademark symbols like the arching M of McDonald, or the swoosh sign on Nikes, but no one puts into account the process of coming up with a trademark from conception to the end , and that's not all theres tons of info of what happens In between the beginning and end & theres more , if you should get to that point of having your trademark approved theres still alot of work to be done, like maintenance , vigilance & renewing trademark every ten years. I had no idea of all the intricacies of the trademark world.and the tremendous importance of securing your trademark and how it important it is to the success of your company, so much so that companies are ready to spend thousand and thousands of dollars in court costs to protect their trademark symbol from would be scammers, third party users, and deceptive practices. I dont want to tell you to much, but I will end it with this interesting fact I read in this book. So 63% of trademark applications are rejected every year. You wanna why , read this book to find out .
A Quick and Persuasive Must-Read
I tore through this book because it was packed with so much excellent information. As a small business owner with a completely unprotected brand, I hadn't given much thought to obtaining a registered trademark. But after reading the information and anecdotes in this book, I'm looking into the process of getting one for myself. It's a great way to protect my business and all that I am putting into it. And that's something I don't think I would realize without this book. Unlike a lot of books on business practices, this one is written in a very conversational tone. It's easy to follow and persuasive without being condescending or bullying. It really outlines the reasons why some companies need a registered trademark without putting on the pressure until the reader feels cornered. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who has a small business or plans to start one! It's a quick read that could save you years of time and countless dollars down the road.
Great book for a lay person!
Before I studied this book, I thought I had some knowledge of what a trademark and a copyright were - the differences between the two, as well as its similarities. Turns out I didn't - and this book was a huge part of that. The next bit of advice I really liked regarding trademark was the idea of not trying to shove the service or product you are trademarking down everyone's throats - your trademark doesn't have to explicitly describe what you are offering to the public....your marketing will do that for you. After all, what is Google? You create your name, your trademark and keep your services separate. This book is definitely a good start to showing you how to prepare a trademark, beyond the differences of copyright and trademark, but be forewarned that it doesn't tell you explicitly the step by step process. It is more for those who are on the fence about it in general and how to decide when your brand is at that step.
Don’t build a business without this book!
This book is a “must read” for anyone who is building a business, building a brand, or re-branding! It’s not often that a veteran in their field writes something so comprehensive and so simple..so easy to read and understand for the lay person. That’s exactly what this book is. It is an easy to understand guide in simple language that deals with the often overlooked, and yet absolute necessity of brand protection. Many entrepreneurs overlook trademarking completely or until it’s too late, leaving profits on the table. We have entered a new era of online marketing, and new rules apply. Hats off to Ms. Hodgson for writing something so timely and giving us strategies to navigate this new environment.
Absolute must for new business owners
This book is an absolute must for anyone starting a new business, is building a small business or just wanting to learn more about brand protection. It’s so informative and easy to read—and the tone is colloquial and non-intimidating! It’s also a fast read and includes good strategies that anyone can understand. The book made me truly understand the importance of brand protection and how to go about it. I knew nothing about trademarks before I read this book, but now I understand them and so much more. Before reading this, I would not have known that I needed to trademark what I am doing. P.S. Loved learning the 3 Ss—Select, Secure and Sustain!
A MUST BUY FOR ENTREPRENEURS!
This is a great book from an author who is a brand protection attorney who knows the industry very well. She provides a three step plan for business owners in assisting them to develop and protect their assets and brands. A must read if you are a business owner or looking to open up your business. Her take on not only protecting your business but also on how social media can plan a key role in developing your business but also protecting it with Online Market Places, Google AdWords and other platforms. Being an entrepreneur is not just about owning your own business, labor and ideas but it also protecting them. And that in itself is an animal on its own. This book provides that knowledge.
I Highly Recommend!
This book is a good reference guide that will empower you with a plan towards safeguarding the life of your brand. The author has done a great job in providing and explaining a three step process in helping you to insure yourself and create a strong and legally protected brand. The trademark principles have been clearly presented in an easy to understand language making the book to become even much interesting to read with the good tips that have been highlighted using a standard format. It is actually a book that will help you have access to the keys that will truly unlock your business doors and help you achieve your desired goals and targets. I highly recommend!
Easy to read 3 step process
Great quick read on trademark law, how to protect yourself, the risks to your business and three easy steps to evaluate a trademark for your business. I am really thankful I read this as it gives me a deeper perspective of developing logos for companies. Now I will feel confident that I have a sustainable product. I wish there were more legal jargon and more in depth look at the complexities but I suppose that’s why they suggest hiring a professional! Would suggest to any new business owner looking to understand the tech business platform.
Clarifying, easy to understand, generally interesting
I usually only read fiction, but my interest in writing has led me to explore business, and with it comes the need to understand copyright and trademark. I really thought those two were both the same thing, whoops! The book was written in easily understandable, down-to-earth language. I expected that learning these kinds of things would be boring but this really wasn't. And I have to tell you, my short attention span really appreciated the breaking down of the process into three steps. Much easier to manage that way! I'd recommend this book for anyone who's having a hard time understanding the issue of trademarking and needs it put in layman's terms.
